Juniperus pinchotii (redberry juniper or Pinchot juniper) occurs in small, scattered populations in southwestern and western parts of Oklahoma and is abundant on rocky hills and stream banks of central to west Texas. The pollen is allergenic and is shed in the fall from mid/late September to late November. On some days in October and November with strong southwest winds, J. pinchotii pollen is carried to central and northeast Oklahoma and is registered by our air samplers in Tulsa. The redberry juniper pollen levels in Tulsa are generally low, but on a few days we have seen high concentrations, which could cause symptons in persons allergic to cedar pollen.
