Populus is a genus of trees native to the Northern Hemisphere, and are commonly known as poplars, aspens, and cottonwoods. There are two species of Populus are native to Oklahoma - P. deltoides (cottonwood) and P. alba (white poplar). In addition other Populus species have been introduced and are used as ornamentals. Populus trees are dioecious with separate male and female trees.
Pollen grains, produced in long catkins, are inaperturate (lacking any pores or colpi) and 25-35 µm in diameter. The exine is thin, minutely granular, and often appears cracked or flaking. In the Tulsa area, the pollen is airborne from mid-March to early May.
