Curvularia is an asexual ascomycete genus whose conidia are present in outdoor air. In the natural environment, Curvularia species occur as saprobes and plant pathogens. Curvularia can be a cause of allergic fungal sinusitis, and the conidia are allergenic.
Curvularia conidia are light to medium brown with prominent transverse septa (cross walls), and usually with 3 to 7 cells. The central cell bulges along one side giving the spore a curved shape. The end cells are usually lighter in color and with thinner walls. Occasionally, the end cells collapse a bit. The conidia are formed individually (not in chains) and have a prominent attachment scar at the base.
