The Kingdom Fungi includes over 155,00 described species; however, mycologists estimate that the total number of fungal species is between 1 million to 3.8 million species or even more. Clearly, much research needs to be done to understand the true diversity of organisms in the Kingdom Fungi. Currently, various systems of fungal classification that have been proposed recognize from 7 to 12 phyla within the Kingdom Fungi. Fungi known to have airborne spores are included in three phyla, which are described in the following links:Â
Mucoromycota (zygomycetes)
Ascomycota (ascomycetes)
Basidiomycota (basidiomycetes)
In addition, the air spora also includes spores from fungal-like organisms that are not in the main line of fungal-evolution and, therefore, not classified in the Kingdom Fungi. These fungal-like organisms include:
Myxomycota (myxomycetes or slime molds)
Oomycota (oomycetes or water molds)
